Lagos State Rejects Low UTME Cut-Off, Says Candidates Below 185 Will Not Gain Admission
The Lagos State Government has declared that candidates who score below 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will not be admitted into any of the state’s universities.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, during a ministerial press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa. The event was organised to mark the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Mr. Sule criticised the decision by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, commonly known as JAMB, to approve 150 as the minimum cut-off mark for university admissions. According to him, the benchmark is too low for institutions owned by Lagos State.
He explained that none of the state’s three universities would admit students who scored below 185, insisting that Lagos must maintain high academic standards.
The commissioner also stated that Lagos should not lower its educational requirements to match states facing greater educational challenges. He stressed that the government would continue improving access to tertiary education without sacrificing quality.
According to him, the state has expanded its university system from one institution to three in recent years, as part of efforts to create more opportunities for admission seekers.
He added that plans are also underway to establish a fourth state-owned institution, which will focus on medicine and health sciences. The proposed university is being developed in partnership with the state Ministry of Health.
Mr. Sule noted that the administration remains committed to investing in education infrastructure, improving learning opportunities, and strengthening the standard of higher education across the state.
