Lagos State Rejects Low UTME Cut-Off, Says Candidates Below 185 Will Not Gain Admission The Lagos State Government has declared that candidates who score below 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, will not be admitted into any of the state’s universities. The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, during a ministerial press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa. The event was organised to mark the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office. Second, candidates seeking admission into Education programmes and some Agriculture courses will no longer be required to sit for the UTME examination. While the policies were presented as efforts to improve access to higher education, many education observers believe they raise deeper concerns about academic standards and the future quality of graduates entering Nigerian universities. The announcement was made during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja last week. Concerns Over the 150 Cut-Off Ma...
